Yoga poses and exercise for beginners

4 YOGA POSES AND EXERCISES FOR BEGINNERS

If you’re new to Yoga, it can be a little bit overwhelming. From synchronising breath and movement through a set series of postures to staying balanced and harnessing your energy, new students often find the sequence a little challenging. This is why Yoga is called a discipline.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT – BASIC YOGA POSES TO TRY AT HOME

Becoming familiar with and learning these beginner poses will help your body relax and prepare for more strenuous postures:

  1. Mountain Pose: Stand tall with feet together, shoulders relaxed, and arms at sides. Your weight should be evenly distributed through your soles. Then, take a deep breath and raise your hands straight overhead, palms facing each other and fingertips reaching up towards the sky.
  2. Cobra: Lie face down on the floor with legs extended, and thumbs directly under your shoulders. The tops of your feet should be on the floor. Squeeze your glutes as you press your shoulders down and away from your ears. Raise your chest towards the wall in front of you.
  3. Child’s Pose: Sit up comfortably on your heels, and roll your torso forward. Your forehead should rest on the floor in front of you. Bring your chest as close to your knees as you comfortably can, and extend your arms in front of you.
  4. Butterfly Pose: Sit on the ground, bending both knees and bringing the soles of your feet together. Resting your hands on your feet, use your leg muscles to press your knees towards the floor. Lengthen your spine so your forehead is almost touching your feet and relax your shoulders.

In all of these basic Yoga poses, you should hold each pose for 5 breaths, or as long as you want. Divine Goddess offers a range of yoga DVDs and books for beginners.
